1. The Genre of Black Light Theatre

Black light theatre, also known as dark theatre or simply "black theatre," is a specialized theatrical technique that originated in Prague. Its core principle relies on the physical properties of light and color. The stage is kept in absolute darkness, illuminated only by ultraviolet (UV) light, often referred to as "black light." Performers and objects invisible under normal light become visible when coated or dressed in fluorescent colors or materials that glow intensely under UV light.

The key to the illusion lies in the use of "black box" conditions and performers dressed head-to-toe in black velvet or other non-reflective black materials. Against a black backdrop, these invisible performers manipulate the glowing props and costumes, creating the impression that inanimate objects are moving autonomously or that visible performers are flying, shrinking, or interacting with magical elements. The art form is inherently visual and often relies heavily on dance, pantomime, and music rather than spoken dialogue, making it accessible to international audiences regardless of language.

2. The Founding and Early Development of HILT Black Light Theater Prague

HILT Black Light Theater Prague was established in 2007 by actor, dancer, and musician Theodor Hoidekr, alongside film and theater actress Štěpánka Pencová. Their vision was to create innovative black light theatre performances that blended traditional techniques with fresh artistic ideas.

The company's roots took hold quickly on the international stage. Their very first project in 2007 was a short show for "Motorola" in New Delhi, India, featuring Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan – an early indication of their global potential. The same year saw them collaborate with "WOW show Prague" on corporate events for "Alcatel" in Bratislava, Slovakia, and "Club Beer" in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador. These initial projects were swiftly followed by tours in Greece and Germany, solidifying their presence beyond the Czech Republic almost immediately after formation.

3. Developing Repertoire and Artistic Identity

Following a period of international corporate and short-format performances, HILT debuted its first full-length theatrical production in 2008, "Magic light show," at the "Radek Brzobohatý Theater" in Prague. This marked a significant step towards establishing a core theatrical repertoire.

The year 2009 saw the premiere of "The Painted World" in Ostrava, Theodor Hoidekr's hometown, further expanding their creative catalogue. Over the next few years (2010-2014), HILT toured Czech cities with notable shows like the black light theatre musical "Romeo and Juliet's Dream" and a retrospective piece titled "HILTstory," showcasing their developed artistic style and narrative capabilities.

HILT also embraced collaborative projects within the Czech cultural scene, notably participating in tours with renowned Czech singer Iveta Bartošová in 2010 and performing at a Gala-show with the legendary Karel Gott at Palác Žofín in Prague in 2018. These collaborations demonstrated their versatility and acceptance within the broader entertainment landscape.

Their repertoire continued to grow with premieres like "Phantom - best of black light theatre" in Prague in 2015, followed by a performance at the Teatralki festival in Jelenia Gora, Poland the same year. In 2016, they explored the shadow theatre genre with a show based on "Cinderella," showcasing their willingness to experiment within related visual theatre forms. Key productions such as "Romeo and Juliet's Dream" and the "Cinderella shadow theatre" have received critical acclaim and awards, including recognition at the World Theater Olympics.

A defining characteristic of all HILT performances is their entirely non-verbal nature. Utilizing dance, pantomime, music, and pure visual spectacle, their shows transcend language barriers, allowing for universal understanding and appreciation of their narratives and artistry.

4. Global Reach and International Recognition

From its inception, HILT has maintained a strong international profile. Beyond the early corporate events and tours, their presence has been felt worldwide. They participated in launch events for "Indica Vista" in Mumbai (2008) and "Nissan Micra" in New Delhi (2009).

Their commitment to international exchange and artistic excellence was underscored by their participation in the prestigious World Theater Olympiad held in both New Delhi and Mumbai in 2018, where their work garnered awards. Their performance at the Gala-show for "Porsche Taycan" in Shanghai, China in 2019 is another example of their demand on a global scale for high-profile events. Tours, such as the sold-out "Magic Phantom Comedy" run in Guatemala in 2023, demonstrate their ability to connect with diverse audiences in various cultural contexts. Future plans include representing the Czech Republic at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav in India in 2025 with their new show "Images of Love," where they are already slated to receive two awards, a testament to their continued international recognition.

HILT's corporate event history (Mazda, NCAP Sweden, Hewlett Packard) further illustrates their versatility and ability to adapt their unique artistic form for various occasions globally. Their appearances on television talk shows also contribute to their visibility and reputation.

5. Resilience, Current Operations, and Future Endeavors

Like many performing arts companies, HILT faced challenges during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Demonstrating adaptability, they engaged in live show streaming from March 2019 to 2022, maintaining connection with their audience despite restrictions.

Since May 2022, HILT has established a unique and intimate presence in Prague. They perform daily shows, currently titled "Magic Phantom Comedy," 3-4 days a week in a small, historical underground venue dating from the 15th century. This exclusive setting accommodates only 50 visitors, offering a highly personal and immersive experience.

Despite this intimate home base, HILT continues to plan for larger stages and international tours. Their new show, "Images of Love," premiered in October 2024 and is already scheduled for a large Czech tour in 2025 and 2026, as well as the aforementioned international festival appearances. Their participation in the famous live podcast "True Crimes" at the O2 arena Prague in 2024 highlights their continued relevance and ability to integrate their art into contemporary cultural events.

6. Conclusion

HILT Black Light Theater Prague stands as a vibrant example of innovation and artistry within the specialized genre of black light theatre. Since its founding in 2007, the company has successfully blended the traditional visual illusions of the medium with dynamic dance, expressive pantomime, and compelling non-verbal narratives.
